Program Objective: The
objective of this course is to provide the foot and
ankle surgeon with a balanced exposure to reconstructive
and limb salvage surgery, as well as to foot and ankle
trauma and microsurgical (loupe magnification and
fine-tipped instruments) peripheral nerve manipulations
in the foot and ankle. Also included will be the
effective use of critical appraisal skills, so that
surgeons do not waste their valuable time. The
presentations cover topics that are common to practicing
foot and ankle surgeons, and each entails a review of
the existing literature along with a critical assessment
of the level of clinical evidence supporting the
information. The following topics will be emphasized:
hallux valgus, hallux rigidus, diabetic foot ulcer, and
limb salvage, as well as amputation techniques. Also to
be discussed is peripheral neuroplasty, (that almost any
surgeon can perform), pigmented skin lesions, closed
reduction of fractures, and how this relates to open
reduction and internal or external fixation. Electrical
and low intensity ultrasound stimulation of bone growth
and the use of orthobiological materials to enhance bone
and soft tissue healing, the prevention and recognition
and treatment of lower extremity DVT and PE, and other
complications associated with foot and ankle surgery
will also be discussed
