In addition to examining the dental and periodontal structures, the oral health practitioner is required to be familiar with the plethora of abnormalities which can present in the orofacial region.  This interactive, case-based presentation will provide practical guidelines for accurate initial assessment of orofacial abnormalities most commonly seen in the dental office and provide the oral health care provider with a level of comfort when he/she must make clinical decisions regarding management and/or referral.

 

Learning Objectives: 
Upon completion of this case-based, interactive program, participants will learn about:

 

·           A practical approach to diagnosis of common oral soft tissue lesions

·         The inherent difficulties in recognition of pre-malignant oral lesions

·         The impact of early detection of oral cancer on survival

·         When and how to use adjunct diagnostic procedures to screen red/white lesions.

·         The indications for biopsy and different types of biopsy techniques

  •      How to treat commonly occurring conditions such as traumatic ulcers, canker sores, fever
           blisters, pyogenic granulomas, ANUG, thrush, angular cheilitis, symptomatic geographic
           tongue, hairy tongue, etc.

·         The orofacial manifestations of local and systemic etiology

·         The potential impact of these manifestations on oral health

·         The role of oral care provider in management of patients affected

·         Oral health considerations in patients with HIV disease

·         Detrimental effects of substance abuse on oral health

·         Follow-up regimen and documentation process

Mahnaz Fatahzadeh, BSc, DMD, MSD.

Dr. Mahnaz Fatahzadeh obtained her B.SC. and  DMD degrees  as well as her GPR  certificate  from  the  University  of  British  Columbia  in  Canada  where she  practiced general dentistry for a number of years.  She completed her Oral  Medicine  fellowship and MSD degree at the University of Medicine  and  Dentistry of   New  Jersey (NJDS-UMDNJ) where  she  holds  a  faculty  appointments as an  associate professor and as an attending at the University hospital.
