Program Objective:
12 hour course focusing on
the diagnosis and management of common and
uncommon diseases of skin and bone using histologic
correlations when possible. The purpose of the
course is to improve the physicians diagnostic
problem solving skills using various clinical
topics as a matrix for these
skills set procurement. The course will include a wide
range of topics
including disorders of keratinization, blistering
and eczematous disorders
and common and uncommon tumors of the foot including
biopsy techniques for
nail unit melanoma. Using lesional and pattern
recognition, physicians will
develop skills in diagnosis based on how the skin
disorder presents. For
example, what lesions present itself in a circinate
pattern, what lesions
present as red lesions, blistering lesions? What
disease should you
consider when faced with tear shaped, triangular, or
cigar shaped blisters?
What lesions present themselves as red in color? Other
than melanoma what
should you consider when faced with a black lesion?
Learn how to
differentiate ulcers and diagnose tumors of the foot and
common skin
dermatoses by grouping and differentiating lesions based
on appearance as
well as by location eg: what lesions have predilection
to the legs, ankle
sole and toes? Physicians will be exposed to the skin
manifestations of
noninflammatory and inflammatory arthritis,
as ordering rheumatic blood
tests are appropriate. How is knowing the
pathology of plantar fascitis
important in terms of its therapeutic implications.
Dermatologic
prescription writing will
be demonstrated so that the physician can order
compounded drugs easily.
For example, how to write for compounded
preparations
