Objectives

 

Brief description:

This course is designed to help dentists understand the relationship between the oral environment and dental health. The oral ecological factors underlying major dental diseases and treatments will be discussed along with strategies to guide patients towards optimum health. The material presented will enable practitioners to practice more productive and predictable dentistry by enhancing patient wellbeing and controlling biological factors that lead to pain, tissue breakdown and case failure.

 

 

Topics to be covered:

The teeth in the oral environment

Tooth mineral and saliva.

Dental stain, plaque, calculus and bad breath.

Erosion and abrasion.

 

Caries and the oral environment

How does plaque become caries producing plaque?

Reclaiming a healthy oral environment.

Diagnosis of early caries: Is the dental explorer obsolete? What roles do caries  

detectors play?

 

Acute dental pain: understanding the link between dental pathologies and patient symptoms

Tooth sensitivity: Biology and therapy.

Tooth sensitivity vital bleaching, restorative dentistry and other dental treatments.

Interpreting patient symptoms in acute reversible and irreversible pulpitis.

 

Controversies and new approaches to treating deep caries

Deep caries: can we dig it? Should we?

Drug therapy for the dental pulp- where do we stand?

      If the seal is the deal, how do we achieve a good seal with available restorative  

      materials?

Minimally invasive dentistry- a realistic appraisal.

FACULTY

kenneth Markowitz, D.D.S.

 

Partial CV

Kenneth Markowitz received his DDS from Columbia University in 1985 and did a general practice residency at The Bronx VA Medical Center. Ken has been involved in both research/teaching and general dental practice for his entire career. While in dental school, Ken became interested in tooth sensitivity, dental pain and oral physiology. From 1991-2003 he did research in industry, first at the Block Drug Company Inc., then at GlaxoSmithKline. In 2003, Ken joined the faculty of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. At UMDNJ he serves as a clinical investigator on a number of NIDCR and Industry-funded projects involving oral therapeutics, caries and periodontal disease. Ken’s research activities have resulted in many publications in peer-reviewed journals, numerous abstracts and several United States Patents. Ken also teaches courses dealing with: cariology, oral biology, dental pain and dental materials. Ken practices part time in the school’s faculty practice and is working towards his masters’ degree in oral biology.

Ken is a member of the International Association for Dental Research and is a past president of that organization’s Pulp Biology Group.

Ken is also a member of the American Dental Education Association.
